guess what? it's been a month.

A month ago today, I woke up on a Sunday morning, showered, straightened and blow-dried my hair, then ate some breakfast.

That afternoon I left for Atlanta. From Atlanta to Paris, and from Paris to here.

So it's been a month. It's been fun, and I've really liked being here.

It's been weird being away from my family for so long. I'm missing Father's Day, my mom's birthday (tomorrow!) and my little sister's birthday. It's been hard missing family, friends, and everything at home, but I'm glad that I came.

Skype is, once again, my best friend. I got to Skype with my family on Father's Day, and I Skyped Ali tonight. She was at church along with some of the youth group. It was great to see so many of my friends, youth pastors, and leaders. I miss you guys so much!

  1. What fun to skype with your friends at church. Sometimes it seems like less than a month and at other times it seems like it's been more than a month since you left. I'm so glad you are enjoying your time there. You are a special young woman to spend your summer helping your friends. Love you Katie and miss you.

  2. I love Skype! It's pretty much the only way I keep in contact with my friends that live in other states (or countries!).

In regard to your question you left on my blog...I was really debating between the D3000 and the D5000. As I did more research, though, I found out that the only differences are live view, swiveling screen, and HD movie. Those are all fancy things that I didn't really need - I use my point and shoot if I want those capabilities. Not to mention, for those three things, the D5000 cost about $150-200 more. I went to Best Buy to look at both in person, and the guy recommended the D3000 over the D5000 and the price was better. Soo...that's what made me choose was I did! Oh, and I don't miss any of the features I could have had with the D5000 at all ;)

Okay, sorry this was so long!

  3. I read your question again...and I realized I forgot to answer the first part! The D3000 is working AMAZINGLY. I would definitely recommend to anyone that's in the market for a DSLR. It's my first DSLR, but it's sooo user friendly and over all a really, really, really great camera.

  4. Grandma- so far, it hasn't seemed like that long for me. I'd love it if I could Skype with you sometime! Love, Katie

Ali- "I feel like the kid in kindergarten with the shiny new toy." "so does that make me the shiny new toy?" hahahaha. I miss you

carlotta- Ok, thank you very much! I think I'll probably go with the D3000, and maybe spend the extra money to get some lenses. thank you again! :)

  6. Hi,
I was reading your discussion with Carlotta, and thought I'd give my 2 cents, if you don't mind. :)
I'm saving up for my first DSLR, and I was also going back and forth between the D3000 and the D5000, though I eventually decided to go with the D5000, after a LOT of research. I would really like to go for the D90, but that is even farther out of my price range. :) Anyway, if you're still trying to decide, here is an article you might find helpful:

Whatever one you choose, I'm sure you'll love it. :) I am still saving for mine and am so excited I can hardly stand it.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. :)

  7. Oh, and definitely get to the store so you can handle them and mess around with them, and see what one you like better.

  8. Thanks so much Haley! Any advice you have is helpful!

Since you sent this I've been researching and reading about everything. I think I'll end up getting the D5000 and maybe an extra lens.

I looked at the D90, and besides costing more money than I have, (I don't really have any money right now lol) I read that the D5000 is a better camera for the price.

I'm still debating, and I guess that I have some time before I have enough money and I have to decide.

Have you handled either the D3000 or the D5000 yet? If so, how did they compare? I'd love to hear any of your thoughts about the cameras.

    Thanks again. :)

  9. Hey Katie,
I messed around with a D3000 once at Walmart for just a few minutes, not really long, and a D5000 a few times at Target. I was taking some pictures of my brother with the D5000, and I don't even know what setting it was on, but I liked how the pictures looked on whatever setting it was already on. You know, subject was clear, background was a little blurry. (btw, I only have like $300 saved for mine, so it will be awhile before I actually buy mine. :/ ) I will probably be going to Target sometime this week and will mess around with it some more. If there is a D3000 out too I will mess around with them both and drop you a note. :) Have you handled either of them yet?
I've read that the image quality is better in low light on the D5000, and I also like that it has video, live view (which is useful for taking a picture while holding the camera over your head, or taking pics low down, so you don't have to lay on your stomach.) Okay, so I'm really not very good at explaining, so I say, do some more research and handle them yourself until you are SURE. After all, you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars and then think "Oh, I wish I got the other one instead!" :) Okay, that was super long, sorry about that, but when I get to Target and mess around with them I'll let you know what I think. And I'll try not to write another book here. :0)

  12. I'll keep looking and researching I guess! I'm in the Middle East right now, and I've only been looking for a new one for a few weeks, so I haven't been able to handle any. I'll probably have to wait until I get back to look at them. Thank you for the links and stuff! It's been really helpful. I can't wait until I can actually get it! :)
